First Stop covers the first, basic elements of punctuation: capital letters and full stops, uses of capitalisation and question marks. It is excellent for pupils with special needs. Vocabulary is limited and the motivating tasks can be completed independently. First Stop is suitable for a wide age range. It fits in well with the grammar and punctuation work for the English Programme of Study for KS1. Two other similar books are available: Stop it!, which covers more punctuation rules and is suitable for older pupils, and Stop it, Editor!, in which pupils edit texts and find mistakes. Each story has two versions: one with simpler text and more limited vocabulary, which is useful for less-confident readers. Suitable for KS1 plus older pupils with less-developed literacy skills.
